Risk factors add up to metabolic syndrome

One in 3 adults have metabolic syndrome and some may not know they have. It is also a concern for youth with studies estimating nearly 1 in 10 teens have it. Metabolic Syndrome risk factors

Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. While metabolic syndrome is not a disease, it is a risk profile based on a group of health problems that includes having three or more of the following conditions:

1.       Increased waist circumference
2.       High blood pressure
3.       High triglycerides
4.       High blood sugar (caused by insulin resistance)
5.       Low levels of healthy (HDL) cholesterol

Complications from metabolic syndrome can include joint pain and disorders, fatigue, respiratory disorders, snoring and sleep apnea, depression, complications of pregnancy, cancers, and incontinence.

Data from the 2011 Community Health Needs Assessment in Van Wert indicates almost half of Van Wert County adults have a number of the factors that contribute to metabolic syndrome.

-          72.9% of adults are obese or overweight
-          47.6% of adults have high blood pressure
-          49.8% of adults have high cholesterol

Anne Dunn, Van Wert County Hospital’s Director of Wellness Programs and Occupational Health, encourages those who suffer from metabolic syndrome to focus on eating a diet low in fat, with a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grain products.

Dunn also recommends getting regular exercise. For adults, she suggests at least 30 minutes of moderate activity almost every day. For children, 60 minutes of moderate activity almost every day is recommended.

Van Wert County Hospital is hosting a series of educational sessions about metabolic syndrome. The first session covered what exactly metabolic syndrome is, which this post reviewed most of the information.

The second session is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, in the hospital cafeteria conference room. The session, “Shrink Your Waist and Shrink Your Risk,” will feature Brittany Poe, a registered dietician.

The third session will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 6, in the same location. The session will be titled “Heart Health and Metabolic Syndrome” and will feature exercise specialists Alison Hammons and Trisha Jones.
